Shale gas explorers San Leon have struck an exclusive deal with Chevron for technology to upgrade oil from its operations in Morocco.

The agreement will see San Leon working with Chevron’s Lummus Global arm to upgrade their shale extraction technology and produce high quality synthetic crude from the Timahdit area.

Chevron Lummus Global are to design an upgrading unit for the oil, which will be refined locally as San Leon looks to up output from the 600million barrel resources on the Timahdit licence.

“CLG is a world leader in upgrading technology who brings real strength to our team,” said San Leon chairman Oisin Fanning.

“Our continued cooperation with our existing partners, ONHYM in Morocco, along with Enefit and now CLG, brings further credibility to San Leon’s commitment to commercially develop oil shale in Morocco.”

A feasibility study is due to be carried out on the shale project by the end of the year, ahead of beginning construction next year.
