An oil and gas strategy for Scotland is due to be unveiled by the first minister in Aberdeen.

Alex Salmond will set a series of targets and describe the industry as one of Scotland’s greatest industrial success stories of the past 40 years.

Oil and gas is the largest industry sector in the UK.

It contributes almost a fifth of all corporation tax paid to the UK Treasury and supports more than 400,000 jobs – about half of them in Scotland.

Mr Salmond will unveil his industry blueprint at Hydrasun, an Aberdeen-based supply company.

The strategy – developed by the Scottish government in association with the industry and the public sector partners – identifies six priorities.

They include measures to extend the life of oil fields, increase exports and identify clear priorities for innovation.
