Chevron has struck gas off western Australia in the Greater Gorgon Area, with the deep-water Satyr-2 well encountering around 39 metres of net gas pay.

The Carnarvon Basin well is located in the WA-374-P permit area around 120 kilometres northwest of Barrow Island, which hosts the Gorgon LNG project. The well was drilled in 1088 metres of water to a total depth of 3796 meters. The company said Satyr-2 marked its fifteenth discovery in Australia in the past three years, the last of which saw the company uncover 30 metres of net gas pay with the Pontus-1 exploration well in Block WA-37-L in late July. Chevron operates the block on a 50% stake with fellow supermajors Shell and ExxonMobil each holding 25%.
