Canada’s Talisman Energy has hit gas in the final well of a three well campaign on the Szczawno concession in Poland’s Baltic basin.

Szymkowo-1 was drilled to a total depth of 4551 metres to assess the Lower Silurian, Ordovician and Upper Cambrian formations in the southern portion of the Baltic basin.

Partner San Leon Energy said continuous gas shows were encountered over 600 metres while drilling consisting of methane, ethane and propane which it added was consistent with a potentially wet gas system.

The strongest shows were observed in the Lower Silurian and Ordovician intervals and 315 metres of continuous core were taken from to evaluate the rock properties of the intervals.

An open-hole logging programme was also carried out to further evaluate the potential of the well and San Leon said interpretation of the core and logs was expected to take about six months.

Szymkowo-1 has now been completed and cased for future operations which could include pressure testing of the formations and the fracking of several intervals in the well.
